Waste management and urban recycling

Objective: Reducing environmental pollution especially plastic waste and other non-bio degradable materials by creating waste management entrepreneurship in Monrovia.

LIFE will through its urban young people programmes work with communities in waste management as waste separation targeting plastic waste and non-bio degradable material. LIFE will explore partnerships with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Paynesville City Authority (PCA) and schools in and around Monrovia and develop campaigns targeted at environmental clean ups and waste separation especially around schools, public markets and other public spaces.  LIFE will additionally regularly engage with environmental clubs in schools to increase education and awareness on the dangers of poor waste management practices. This programme links well with climate change programme where poor waste management practices have contributed to flash flooding in some parts of Monrovia and also increase stagnant water places that leads to more mosquito breeding places. In this programme, LIFE will provide support for waste management entrepreneurship among young unemployed Liberians who will able to derive livelihoods from waste separation and recycling.
